A petition demanding more rigorous law enforcement against reckless driving has gained significant momentum, gathering more than 4,000 signatures following a fatal collision in Camps Bay.
The public appeal was launched after a cyclist was killed in a crash along Victoria Road earlier this week. The petition, initiated by a close friend of the victim, emphasises that cyclists are legitimate road users who belong on the road, rather than on the pavement.
Aidan Erasmus was among the first people on the scene of the crash that claimed the life of his friend, Idries Sheriff. Erasmus recalls that, initially, he did not realise the victim was someone he knew.
"I walked past it. Everything had been kind of contained, and I didn't see any familiar bikes at first. Later on, when we were having coffee, a friend tried to call his cell phone. Someone at the scene picked it up, and that's how we heard about what happened."
The driver involved, Bongani Mthetwa, was arrested and faces charges of culpable homicide.
Mthetwa has since been released on R15,000 bail. The case has been postponed, and he is scheduled to appear in court again in April 2026.
