Deputy President Paul Mashatile says it’s too early to “sound the drums of victory” following the successful passing of the 2025 Budget and the beginning of a national dialogue.

Mashatile said 2025 saw the start of a national dialogue process intended to foster inclusive governance and greater social cohesion in the country.

He said another milestone that tested the unity of the Government of National Unity (GNU) was the Budget, which was delayed for months due to disagreements among parties before its final adoption.

Mashatile was delivering his annual address in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Thursday, which focused on the delivery of services.

In his address, the Deputy President stated: "This achievement exemplified our determination to prioritise the nation, advancing crucial legislation aimed at fostering inclusive economic growth, creating jobs, alleviating poverty and the cost of living. However, it is far too early to sound the drums of victory. Millions of our people still wake up to the harsh realities, including poverty, unemployment, [and] the rising cost of living."

While acknowledging the successful government transition, Mashatile cautioned against celebration given the high levels of unemployment and other social ills in the country.
