Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero is in the firing line once again, as he’s set to face a motion of no confidence on Tuesday.
The latest attempt to remove him from office was tabled by the United Democratic Movement (UDM), African Independent Congress (AIC), and Al-Jama-ah.
The minority parties recently left the African National Congress (ANC)-led coalition government, citing a lack of confidence in Morero’s leadership.
They said that their motion against him is driven by poor service delivery and his failure to consult coalition partners on key decisions.
This week could be a defining moment for Morero’s political career, not only because of the motion of no confidence he faces, but also due to the ANC’s highly contested regional conference scheduled to start on Wednesday.
Morero is seeking re-election as the ANC’s regional leader, going head-to-head with the widely supported Loyiso Masuku.
However, before the conference kicks off, Morero must first deal with the motion of no confidence filed against him in his capacity as the mayor.
UDM councillor Yongama Zingebe said they have no issues with the ANC itself, but specifically against its mayor.
“Under Mayor Morero’s tenure, Johannesburg has experienced one of its most difficult periods of administrative instability and service delivery collapse.”
The council meeting is scheduled to run for two days, which means the motion against Morero could extend as far as Wednesday.
