The Department of Transport has launched a new strategy for drivers, pedestrians and passengers for the festive season.

On Sunday, Minister Barbara Creecy launched the festive season campaign on the N1 highway in Kroonstad.

Creecy said that 800 national traffic police will be deployed to high-risk provinces, such as Gauteng, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

At least 9,400 road deaths have already been reported so far in 2025, which is 700 fewer than in the same period in 2024.

Creecy said that the department plans to focus on raising public awareness ahead of the festive season.

“We will step up public awareness campaigns through multiple media and community channels. The education and awareness campaign will be pursued to ensure that road safety messages reach all communities and various road users at train stations, bus and taxi ranks, exhibitions at malls and shopping centres, community halls, churches, toll gates and rest stops, sports events, and border posts.”
