Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said that the crime statistics for the second quarter of the year released on Friday showed that safety and crime prevention programmes had reduced murder rates in certain areas in the province.
The statistics show that the murder rate in areas where Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers operate decreased by 9.4% compared to the same period last year.

"While I am outraged and disturbed by the murder rates in the province and across the country, we can see that cooperative and locally-managed policing programmes are reducing murder rates and urgently need to be funded by national government for implementation in every single policing precinct."
Winde said that the Western Cape spends billions of rand to reduce crime in the province.
"This is how we actually, scientifically, using data and evidence, to reduce the crime rates in our region. I'm still encouraged by the Acting Police Minister Cachalia and his willingness to work together to look for new ways in which we can reduce crime."
Winde said that LEAP's success also showed the province was ready to take on investigative powers to ensure illegal guns stay off the streets.
