All fingers are pointing to former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya over instructions to verify a police operation at the home of Katiso “KT” Molefe.

Molefe’s luxury Sandhurst home was raided by members of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) on 6 December 2024.

Molefe was also arrested on the day for the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart.

Members of the PKTT previously testified that they were met with interference by members of the Hawks, who arrived on the scene demanding to know what the investigation was about.

Lebeya is expected to provide crucial answers as to why he instructed Hawks officials to go to the home of Molefe and verify if there was a legitimate police operation taking place.

Testifying before the Madlanga commission on Tuesday, Gauteng Hawks head Ebrahim Kadwa confirmed to the co-commissioner, Advocate Sesi Baloyi, that he received instructions from Lebeya to verify if it was a legitimate police operation.

Baloyi asked, “Is it common and has it ever happened before this that General Lebeya called you to ask to verify an operation of the Hawks?”

“Never,” Kadwa responded.

“So, this was the first time he did that,” said Baloyi.

Before the three Hawks officers testified, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga questioned why they had not yet heard from Lebeya.

“Isn’t the only person we should really hear from [is] General Lebeya now? Have we not heard enough from the other officers?”

The commission will resume on Wednesday morning.
