New Hanover floods: KZN Human Settlements Dept to build temporary homes for victims

The Department of Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has resolved to build temporary homes for the New Hanover flood victims.
Severe rains and floods have left many homeless after their homes were destroyed by the inclement weather.
Areas affected include an informal settlement that was erected in spite of stern warnings against the move by government.

The KZN government said the building of temporary homes for affected residents will begin next week, as assessments are still underway.
Authorities said that the extent of damage caused by severe flooding is yet to be determined.
The Department of Human Settlements said it will start the process of acquiring temporary shelters next week.
MEC Siboniso Duma said he also roped in the national ministry.
“I’ve already spoken to the minister, Minister Simelane, who is going to be here on Monday. After I’ve done all the assessments, we are just going to build temporary residential units.”
As disaster teams are still collecting data, a number of communities are facing power outages as a result of the weather.
Cooperative Governance MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi will visit the affected areas on Tuesday.
