KZN govt urges municipalities to maintain storm drainage systems

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has urged municipalities in the province to maintain their storm drainage systems to curb devastating flooding.
Ntuli spoke to members of the media in Durban on Monday, after devastating flooding that has since claimed one life in the New Hanover area.
He said unmaintained storm drainages have been flagged as one of the contributing factors for flooding.
“That is important that they urgent try to repair and maintain to storm water drainage system so that there will be no problem even during the floods that will cause loss of property and loss lives.”
Ntuli also urged communities to be on high alert as more rain is set to hit the area.
“We are encouraging our people to be on alert as the rains continue, they must listen quiet well to those who are giving alerts such as the weather service authorities, municipalities and government departments so that we don’t lose more lives going forward.”
Disaster teams are continuing to assess the extent of damage caused.
