Police have opened a criminal case against Operation Dudula following a tense protest outside the G20 Leaders’ Summit at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.
The charges include incitement of public violence, violating a court order, and assaulting a police officer.
Earlier today, a tense standoff erupted between public order police and members of the controversial group, with officers using teargas to disperse the crowd.
The group is demonstrating against the summit, arguing that South Africa should prioritise its domestic issues instead.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says police will not tolerate unlawful behaviour.
"Our members gave them a few warnings to go back to the speaker’s corner and they resisted. They then started assaulting police officers and pushing back. That is when police officers started spraying teargas." Mathe said.
