Stakeholders in public transport have repeatedly warned that gaps in regulation leave both drivers and passengers vulnerable to unsafe situations.
The department's spokesperson, Melitah Madiba, said their efforts aim to ensure that the industry is safe for both the driver and passengers.
"It is important for all e-hailing operators to register their apps by visiting the office of the National Department of Transport. The department will also convene meetings across the province to provide details and ensure that e-hailing operators fully understand what is required and are able to comply."
