The African National Congress (ANC) said it has no intention of abandoning Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE), despite opposition to the policy from some parties within the Government of National Unity (GNU).

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has argued that B-BBEE has failed to stimulate economic growth and has instead harmed the economy.

The party maintains that jobs and opportunities should be allocated on merit and qualifications, not race.

The ANC, however, insists that B-BBEE remains necessary to address the legacy of racial injustices that have long disadvantaged black South Africans.

Speaking at a media briefing on Saturday, ANC national executive committee (NEC) member Zuko Godlimpi reaffirmed that B-BBEE is here to stay.

“We remain committed to B-BBEE as an unavoidable path to making South Africa work for all of us. If there are ethical problems with particular instruments of implementing policy, we improve them as we go, but B-BBEE, as a strategic programme, remains intact and it’s not going anywhere. The NEC will not sit and discuss DA views. That is not going to happen.”
