Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has declared that the failed motion of no confidence against him has only served to make him stronger.

Lesufi successfully survived the vote in the provincial legislature on Friday, after the Democratic Alliance's (DA) attempt to remove him failed by a wide margin.

Despite the legislature comprising eleven political parties, the DA was the sole party that voted in favour of his removal. The party had cited several reasons for wanting Lesufi axed, including his recent decision to disband the crime prevention wardens.

Addressing supporters immediately afterwards, Lesufi expressed his pleasure at remaining in office as premier and framed the vote as a unifying moment.

"What has happened here, you have started a new revolution. All political parties that represent the aspirations of our people came together. All political parties that represent the future came together to defeat racists."
