Parly ad hoc committee probing police corruption postpones Nkabinde hearing due to inaccuracies in statement

The parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating police corruption has postponed its hearing with Cedric Nkabinde due to inaccuracies in his sworn statement.

Now MPs want Minister Senzo Mchunu’s chief of staff to go back and fix the discrepancies in his submission around the dates and meetings with implicated individuals like Brown Mogotsi.

Nkabinde was set to appear for the whole day to give his testimony, but proceedings were postponed just before the lunch break.

Cedric Nkabinde’s evidence had focused on his relationships with Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and how he got to know corruption-accused businessman Brown Mogotsi.

He told the committee about when he first made contact with Mogotsi, leading up to the directive to disband the political killings task team last December.

Nkabinde also got his dates wrong on when Minister Mchunu was in Lusikisiki following the killing of 18 people last year, saying it was in September instead of October.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema accused him of misrepresenting facts.

"You must say you completely want to apologise to a particular extent, even ask that you withdraw this affidavit and go and do a proper affidavit where you remember dates."

ActionSA MP Dereleen James: "You’ve given us a sworn statement and you now come and say you have thumbsucked dates."

But Nkabinde told MPs that his devices were seized over a month ago during a raid at his house and he had no way of verifying certain dates.

After a short adjournment, chairperson Soviet Lekganyane ceded to calls for the meeting to be deferred to allow Nkabinde time to correct his statement.
