JOHANNESBURG - All lanes on the N1 South after the Maraisburg exit have been fully reopened to traffic following a major incident earlier on Wednesday involving an overturned tanker.

The tanker, which was loaded with paraffin and diesel, crashed into the highway barriers, leading to the temporary closure of the road.

Details surrounding the cause of the crash remain under investigation.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed the scene had been cleared and traffic was now flowing freely.

“We can confirm that a major incident involving a tanker crash on the N1 South of the Maraisburg exit has been fully cleared,” Fihla said. “All previously closed lanes on the N1 South are now reopened to traffic. Traffic is currently free-flowing, and delays are easing rapidly.”

Fihla thanked the public for their cooperation during the emergency response.

“We thank all road users for their patience and cooperation while emergency services and law enforcement officials worked diligently to manage the hazardous situation and clear the highway,” Fihla added.
