Animal welfare organisation Four Paws has urged communities to be mindful of pets and wildlife when setting off fireworks for Guy Fawkes.
Guy Fawkes is celebrated annually on 5 November.
It's not officially recognised in South Africa, but informal firework activity still occurs in many neighbourhoods.
The organisation has reminded the public of some practical tips to support their pets and neighbours.
The group's Fiona Miles said fireworks cause panic and trauma for animals.
“We’re calling on communities to protect pets and wildlife from the trauma caused by fireworks. Every year, animals go missing, get injured, or suffer severe anxiety all because of informal celebrations, let’s choose compassion over chaos.”
