Detainee who escaped custody from Wynberg court still on the run

A detainee who escaped from custody at the Wynberg Magistrates Court is still on the run as authorities intensify their search.

The man was part of a group of four suspects who escaped custody exactly a week ago.

They were in court on charges of the illegal possession of firearms and housebreaking.

Three of the suspects have since been re-arrested.

Chairperson of the Cape Flats Safety Forum, Abie Isaacs, said that tighter security measures were needed to prevent similar cases.

"We are clearly concerned with the escape of four awaiting trial prisoners. We note that some of them have been arrested. However, we encourage, and we call on the institutions that deal with awaiting trial prisoners to step up their safety and security aspects, specifically in the Wynberg policing precinct."
