The Western Cape mobility department says it hopes taxi associations can find a peaceful solution to their issues.

This comes after the Western Cape High Court made a ruling on Thursday, dismissing taxi association CODETA’s urgent interdict application against the closure of certain taxi routes.

Routes were closed due to a rise in taxi-related shootings, with a 30-day closure implemented by the provincial mobility department.

The shutdown of routes affected taxi drivers and commuters in Mfuleni, Khayelitsha, and Somerset West.

MEC for mobility, Issac Sileku, said the focus must remain on restoring stability and ensuring that no commuter or operator’s life is at risk.

"With seven days remaining in the 30-day extraordinary measures, we call on all parties to return to the table and work towards a lasting peaceful solution."
