Despite some internal squabbles, members of Tshwane’s multiparty coalition government said the administration remains strong.

The African National Congress-Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ActionSA-led coalition is providing Tshwane residents with a feedback report, a year after taking control of the capital from the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Residents and political party supporters have gathered at the Lucas van den Berg Sports Ground for the feedback session.

Members of Tshwane’s Mayoral Committee said the city has stabilised since taking over what they describe as a municipality in crisis, following eight years of DA-led coalitions.

However, it has not always been plain sailing, as the coalition is divided over the future of Tshwane’s City Manager, Johan Mettler.

Some parties want Mettler to be pushed out, while others do not. This division has led to some public spats between the coalition partners.

However, EFF Councillor and MMC for Environment, Obakeng Ramabodu, said disagreements are normal in any multiparty coalition.

“We want to call on the residents of Tshwane to support this administration and this leadership led by the mayor,” Ramabodu said. “It’s not going to be a bed of roses. We are going to be robust, where we don’t agree, we don’t agree, and if we don’t agree, don’t think we are fighting the mayor. This is our mayor, we have shown her all the corners of Tshwane.”

He also issued a warning to external parties. “All of you who are trying to separate this coalition, don’t do it now. We are going to meet in elections with facts and results.”
