Equal Education (EE) and the Equal Education Law Centre (EELC) have welcomed the Department of Basic Education’s decision to extend the public comment deadline on two important draft regulations.
These relate to school admissions and classroom sizes.
Some concerns include overcrowded classrooms with more than 60 learners, and unfair admission practices.
The organisations are calling for strong public input, and for government to actively involve communities that are disadvantaged by poor school conditions.
This would include running a proper public awareness campaign, translating regulations into all official languages, and engaging clearly with communities to solve the real problems in schools.
“There is a lot of room for more equitable use of the resources we already have,” argues Equal Education Law Centre Senior Researcher Katherine Sutherland
The new deadline for public comments is 5 December 2025.
