On Tuesday, community members chained themselves to the national key point’s gates to highlight frustration with gun violence.

The group included mothers who fear for their children’s safety and wellbeing as the shootings continue.

“The biggest issue is that we're not seeing convictions of kingpins and at the end of the day, we can keep catching foot soldiers all we like; apart from them coming out on bail and parole very quickly, we don't see the actual kingpins being isolated and removed and if we don't do that, we can't expect anything to really change,” said chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police Ian Cameron.

A resident from the area spoke to EWN on condition of anonymity

“What we as a community want and we expect is for the president to come in and say, ‘You know what, I declare a national state of disaster on Western Cape’ and bring in the defence force, bring in the army to stabilise everything. This is what we need.”
