Man shot & killed in Browns Farm in suspected taxi-related incident

Another person believed to be a taxi boss was shot and killed in Cape Town on Tuesday, as gun violence continues to grip the industry.

A 61-year-old man was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Dlephu Street in Browns Farm.

Several taxi operators and commuters have been killed or injured in violence linked to taxi routes in the Mfuleni, Khayelitsha, and Somerset West areas recently.

From Wednesday, some taxi routes on these corridors will be closed for 30 days due to the ongoing violence.

The province's Mobility MEC, Isaac Sileku, is expected to meet with both Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) today to try and end their deadly conflict.

Police spokesperson Joseph Swaartbooi said detectives are still at the crime scene, combing for clues.

"Information at our disposal suggests that unknown gunmen opened fire at the deceased and fled the scene.

The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The motive for this attack is believed to be taxi related. Nyanga police registered a murder for further investigation."
