JOHANNESBURG - A serial rapist has been arrested after his reign of terror for 17 years in Gauteng and the North West.
The 41-year-old man was handcuffed in Diepkloof, Soweto, on Wednesday this week.
A collaborative effort between national and provincial officers led to his arrest after years of investigations.
The suspect, whose first crime was reported in 2008, has accumulated 45 cases since then.
The Diepkloof police station has 38 dockets, while the Orlando station has five crimes, including rape, kidnapping, robbery and assault.
His victims are aged between 14 and 55.
His crimes consisted of using a gun and a knife, while covering himself with a balaclava to hide his face.
“The SAPS [South African Police Service] commends the bravery of the victims and the efforts of the investigative team. We continue to work tirelessly to ensure justice and safety for our communities,” said police spokesperson Tintswalo Sibeko.
He is expected to appear at the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday.
