CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Agriculture Department has confirmed bird flu has been detected in the province.

It said cases of the disease was found in ducks near Paarl. The department reiterated that poultry products sold at grocery stores are safe for consumption.

Initial outbreaks were confirmed in chickens in the North West and Mpumalanga provinces.

All affected birds have since been culled to prevent the spread if the disease.

State veterinarian Dr Laura Roberts said affected sea birds can be reported to rehabilitation centres.

“The virus has also been detected in pelicans near Malmesbury and gulls from the cape town area. Poultry producers are urged to take all possible measures to protect their birds by preventing direct and indirect contact with wild birds and other poultry farms.”

Roberts added that the risk to humans and pets is still low: “Clothing, vehicles and equipment can be contaminated with the virus via faeces and other body fluids, and can serve as a source of infection, the public is advised to be cautious and to avoid contact with sick and dead birds and rather just report to the local state vet or responsible conservation or municipal authority.”
