JOHANNESBURG - Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia said while the circumstances which led to his appointment are troubling, he's committed to serving as best as he can.
The Wits law professor and former Gauteng Community Safety MEC was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday night, after he placed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave.
This comes more than a week after KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) top cop Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi blew the lid off alleged political interference and corruption within the police service, implicating Mchunu amongst others.
Cachalia, who currently chairs the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council, said he'd draw from some of the work he's done.
"So I think the focus also has to be on the effectiveness of the police in dealing with crime, particularly those that have a strong impact on communities. I'm thinking about drugs, for instance, violent crime, and of course, we have a problem of organised crime. So, I'm still wrapping my head around what the priorities need to be."
Ramaphosa is yet to appoint a caretaker minister to work until Cachalia takes over the reins in August.
