Zululand informal settlement fire claims 1 life

A blaze at the Zululand informal settlement in Masiphumelele has claimed one life.
The city’s fire and rescue services revealed that they were alerted about the fire in the early hours of this morning
Department spokesperson Jermaine Carelse has confirmed that the fire has been contained and said that firefighting crews remain on site to monitor the situation.
Gift of the Givers spokesperson, Ali Sablay, said their teams have also been called to assist those affected.
“The blaze destroyed a number of structures, including a local church. Emergency services have cordoned off the site as forensic teams work to retrieve the body of a male victim who tragically lost his life in the fire. Our teams will be on the ground to deliver urgent humanitarian need in terms of hot meals and clean drinking water.”
