JOHANNESBURG - Alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala is expected back in the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Friday morning.

Matlala faces charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.

The charges are related to an attack on his ex-girlfriend, actress Tebogo Thobejane, in 2023.

Thobejane survived a shooting incident on the N1 highway near Sandton, and police said Matlala was behind the unsuccessful hit.

During an appearance in court in June, Matlala abandoned his bail bid, while his wife, Tsakani Matlala, was granted bail of R20,000.

He is currently being held at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre's c-max unit.
He was transferred to the high-risk section of the facility this week after being found in possession of a cellphone during a raid.

Matlala is also currently in the spotlight, following damning claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi linked Matlala to the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, in serious allegations of interference and misconduct within the police service.
