JOHANNESBURG - Preparations are underway in Mpumalanga, where a memorial service for the late former Deputy President David Mabuza is set to be held on Thursday.

The events aimed at honouring Mabuza's legacy will be held at three separate locations on Thursday afternoon.

Mabuza succumbed to what his family described as breathing difficulties in a hospital in Sandton last week.

Sounds of mourners singing hymns echoed across the Phola Village in Mbombela in the afternoon. This is where the main memorial service was set to be held - at a local sports field.

A sombre mood consumed the entire village, with many leaving their homes to hear reflections on the legacy of the former deputy president.

This African National Congress (ANC) supporter said while he didn’t know Mabuza personally, he was a man close to his heart.

“I am here because DD Mabuza developed Mpumalanga. That’s why I'm here today. I’m struggling to make peace with his passing.”

Exactly a week ago, news of Mabuza's passing sent shockwaves across the nation, as many described his passing as untimely and unexpected.
