JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg's Department of Public Safety has expressed frustration over delays in the ballistic report pertaining to the killing of former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor Moshe Mphahlele.
Mphahlele was fatally shot in August 2024 during a service delivery protest in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.
No one has been held accountable for his death so far.
Mphahlele died in the middle of a violent confrontation between Alex residents who had forcibly occupied empty government-owned buildings and private security personnel accompanied by Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers who were trying to evict the squatters.
It is not clear whether the bullet that killed Mphahlele came from the private security company or JMPD officers.
Public Safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku said all firearms were taken for ballistic testing.
“Ballistics are not out yet on Mphahlele. Number two, the case is just hanging in the air. There’s a boy there that was shot, he’s a witness, he said those people even came to my school.”
Tshwaku, who is also an EFF member, said he won’t give up in trying to find justice for his slain colleague.
