JOHANNESBURG - As the City of Johannesburg continues to contend with non-functioning traffic lights, Primedia Outdoor has stepped in to assist the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) with mitigating the crisis.
On Thursday, the city's road agency held a signing ceremony with Primedia Outdoor at one of the city's major intersections between Winnie Mandela and Sandton Drive to officially launch the initiative.
The partnership aims to ensure traffic lights remain operational during power outages and to minimise disruptions to traffic flow, among others.
More than 2,000 intersections are signalled by traffic lights, with the JRA managing a majority of them.
However, the city's intersections have become a daily challenge as hundreds of malfunctioning traffic lights have given rise to increased traffic, accidents and productivity losses, as thousands of hours are wasted in traffic jams.
JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi says he is confident that this collaboration will bear fruit.
"Through these partnerships, we are able to make sure that we have seamless traffic. We all know that, as traffic signals are not working, there's a whole lot of activity happening. You find people having road rages, they become impatient, there are smash and grabs, but with this assistance and partnership, we'll make sure that there's traffic flow.
The collaboration between the entity and the private sector is part of its latest move to bolster its infrastructure renewal and efficiency plan, and modernise its operations.
