JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) said that the reconfiguration of its Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal structures won't affect members deployed to government.
The ANC held a media briefing at Luthuli House on Monday to communicate the outcomes from its two-day national executive committee meeting that took place this weekend.
The meeting was to discuss interventions for Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal following the party’s poor electoral showing in the two provinces.
At this stage, it is still unclear what reconfiguration will mean on a practical level.
However, the ANC said it won't interfere with government deployments.
This means ANC Gauteng chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi, will remain premier of the province and ANC KZN chairperson, Siboniso Duma, will keep his job as the MEC for transport.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said the party didn’t want to interfere with the work of government.
"Configuration in relation to government, we are very clear that government will not be tampered with, it will remain the way it is. That is the directive of the NEC. We are going to tamper with the ANC leadership, that’s what reconfiguration means, within the framework of the ANC constitution."
Mbalula said a detailed reconfiguration plan will be drawn up over the next week.
