CAPE TOWN - Fifteen private security guards from KwaZulu-Natal, a taxi boss and two taxi owners have been charged in connection with a shooting near a Nyanga taxi rank.

Four of the guards are in hospital, but the rest appeared in court on Thursday.

The 18 accused were arrested after one person was killed and seven others were wounded in the attack in Nyanga on Tuesday.

The matter's been postponed by a week.

Police said the private security guards arrested were employed by three different companies in KwaZulu-Natal.

They are accused of being involved in a shootout between warring factions from the same taxi organisation in Cape Town and it's understood they were hired to guard taxi bosses who are in conflict.

Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile: "What we are investigating now is the link between this security company and what has happened in Port St Johns where there was also a security company from KZN that was involved. We will be cooperating with our Eastern Cape counterparts, we want to see if it is not the same company."

During their arrest in Nyanga on Tuesday, police confiscated 13 rifles and seven handguns.
