JOHANNESBURG - Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) said that collaborative efforts are in place to ensure that operations are not affected by a fuel shortage at the OR Tambo International Airport Refinery.

The Fuels Industry Association of South Africa (FIASA) informed ACSA that the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (NATREF) was implementing risk mitigation measures to prevent the disruption of jet fuel supply at the airport.

Last week, a fire occurred at their NATREF refinery which resulted in the damage of a crude distillation unit.

The fuel industry informed ACSA that the distillation unit would be back online in February.

In a statement, ACSA said it was confident that it would have enough fuel supply until late January, adding that it had taken measures to ensure that a shortage is avoided.

The company is expected to receive fuel on Sunday which will be supplemented by a further fuel injection from Durban arriving towards the end of January and increased rail deliveries from Durban and Mozambique.

ACSA said that airlines, passengers, and stakeholders can rest assured that everything is being done to maintain normal airport operations and promised to provide regular updates.
