CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police are hunting down a suspect who shot and killed a security guard during an apparent home invasion in Bergvliet.

Police said that the 54-year-old armed security guard was shot dead after responding to a panic alarm early on Friday morning.

Kirstenhof detectives are hard at work pursuing leads to arrest the suspect who allegedly shot and killed an armed response security guard in Princess Road, Bergvliet at about half-past-four on Friday morning.

Police spoksperson, Joseph Swaartbooi, said that the owner of the premises activated the panic alarm after she was woken by a noise in the house.

"Upon arrival of the security guard, she provided him with the key to the house. When the armed security officer entered the house, a scuffle ensued, which resulted in gunshots being fired." 

Swartbooi said that the armed security guard was shot and later declared deceased on by the medical personnel.

"The unknown suspect fled the scene with the firearm of the deceased and is yet to be arrested. The motive for this attack is alleged housebreaking, which turned into a murder."

Swartbooi said that police were pursuing all leads to arrest the suspect.
