JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC)'s Deputy President Paul Mashatile has called for political tolerance ahead of next week’s by-election in Ward 2 under the uMsunduzi local municipality, in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
Mashatile was speaking during an African National Congress (ANC) campaign in the area on Tuesday.
The ward is hotly contested by the ANC, Inkatha Freedom Party and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
With KZN known for its violent political past, Mashatile suggested these by-elections must unfold without drama.
“We want to see a free and fair election, we don’t want people to fight - everyone is free to vote for the candidate of their choice because that is what democracy is all about - the candidate that is wanted by the majority of people is the one who will win.”
Mashatile also called for order at all voting stations in the area.
