Brandon Leigh (in for Carl Wastie) speaks to spontaneous adventurer, Timo de Jong.

There's spontaneous and then there's hanging out with your friends and then deciding, let's hitchhike from Southampton in the United Kingdom to Cape Town. Why? Because it's cheaper than flights and it's fun.

Well, a 25-year-old adventurer from the Netherlands, Timo de Jong did just that (with his visas).

While de Jong's been travelling the whole world on and off since 2018, after a hang out with friends, he just picked a place from the world map which happened to be South Africa because it was similar in spelling to Southampton - yes, true story.

So, what was the journey like?

First stop was hitching a ride from Dover to France and go as far as the one providing the ride would go...

"I tell them I want to go to South Africa and they say I'm crazy."

But never in de Jong's wildest dreams did he think that his hitch hiking journey would also blossom into an epic friendship with a kindred spirit.

Yes, he  met a woman, Courtney from Canada, who was also doing a hitchhiking trip through the UK and crossed paths with de Jong as they both ended up in Spain.

Courtney decided to join de Jong's journey to South Africa.

From Europe, the pair headed to Africa and made it to South Africa in 250 days.

This adventure cost de Jong and Courtney roughly 15 Euros per person per day, which is about R300-R400.

Up next, the two plan to continue their adventurous ways to hitchhike all the way through South Africa and the other epic provinces.

And for those wondering, de Jong and Courtney are not a couple, 'they're just friends...' even though their fans are hoping that this status changes to something more romantic as they discover the world together.

Here's a look at some of de Jong's journey in videos as he documented it on social media...
