CAPE TOWN - The importance of nutrition has been highlighted ahead of the matric exams that start on Monday.
Heideveld Secondary has 201 grade 12 learners, many of whom rely on feeding scheme meals.
It distributed a letter requesting food donations to treat learners to a sit-down breakfast at school before tackling an exam.
Grade 12 head, Marlene Douries, said many of their matrics were from families struggling to make ends meet, with learners often arriving at school with empty stomachs.
She said that some parents had volunteered to cook and serve meals, with the help of teachers.
"Any kind of help, even monetary, can be paid right into the school's bank account and we will gladly do the shopping or they can drop the items at our school. We are looking for milk, fruit, loaves of bread, peanut butter, eggs, polony, viennas, yoghurts, muffins, maybe some Weetbix or Cornflakes, cheese."
Douries said that matriculants needed nutritious meals to be able to concentrate.
Heideveld Senior Secondary is a no-fee school.
