CAPE TOWN - Alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack claims he was being misled by one of his co-accused on trial.
Modack and 14 others are on trial in the Western Cape High Court.
They face 122 charges for various crimes, including the murder of former head of the anti-gang unit, Charl Kinnear, in September 2020.
On Tuesday, Modack’s defence attorney - Bashier Sibda - told the court his client admits to sending R7,000 to co-accused Amaal Jantjies to purchase two cellphones.
This followed an anti-gang raid on Modack in October 2019, when guns and ammunition were confiscated from his home.
Modack said Yannick Adonis told him she needed the cellphones to communicate with a private investigator who would help them identify police officers involved in the raid.
Sibda told the court Modack intended to lay a civil case against the officers for unlawfully raiding his house.
Modack said Jantjies told him the private investigator was Ashley Tabisher, another co-accused on trial.
Sibda said Modack had no idea Tabisher was a member of the anti-gang unit at the time.
The trial continues.
