JOHANNESBRUG - The Emfuleni Local Municipality claims service delivery has not been affected by the non-payment of salaries to its employees.

Municipal workers, who were meant to be paid on the 25 September, are still waiting to be remunerated nearly two weeks later.

This comes after Eskom attached the municipality’s bank accounts for failing to pay the utility for electricity supply.

The Emfuleni Local Municipality is unsure of when its municipal workers will receive their September salaries.

Eyewitness News has learnt that some have stopped working, citing they don’t have money to commute or fill up their cars to drive to work.

Despite this, Emfuleni spokesperson Makhosonke Sangweni claims service delivery is unaffected.

“We can’t say service delivery has been affected because people who must receive water are receiving water. So that should tell you that we do have service delivery.”

But a municipal worker begs to differ: “Services are disrupted. There is no service delivery now as we speak because of the situation.”

The Emfuleni Local Municipality is now engaging the National Treasury, hoping it’ll step in to assist.
