CAPE TOWN -The Drakenstein Municipality is protesting alongside Paarl residents on Monday to challenge the National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (NERSA) proposed 40% electricity tariff increase.

Drakenstein Mayor Stephen Korabie invited residents to join the march from the Hugenote Train Station in Paarl to Drakenstein's Civic Centre to protest the price hike to be effected on the 1 April 2025.

Korabie said a petition will be handed over to the council's Speaker Koos le Roux to take residents' concerns to NERSA.

"Since 2009 up until last year, Eskom has increased the electricity price by 450%, and now they coming again to us for another 40%. This drastic increase will severely impact our community, especially during these trying economic times."
