DURBAN - Despite having lost voter support in KwaZulu-Natal, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema believes the party still has the potential to grow in the province.

The party held regional general assemblies over the weekend, where its KZN structures accounted for the 8% decline in the May election.

Before the last meeting with the structures on Sunday, Malema addressed the funeral of Emily Twala, the mother of the party's KZN chairperson, Mongezi Twala.

With the drastic drop in support, as seen in the May general election, the EFF in KZN finds itself with only two seats in the provincial legislature.

While many expected some sort of action against the provincial leadership, Malema, who addressed mourners at the Twala funeral, had this to say.

"Your son, Mongezi Twala, was not a coward mama and anyone who suggests that he failed to defend the EFF here in KZN has never experienced what we experienced."

He pointed to the uMkhonto weSizwe Party as a major challenge but said that the EFF would not allow history to repeat itself.

"The truth of the matter is that the old man from Nkandla shocked all of us, but we will never allow that shock to happen again, and we will rebuild the EFF of your son here in KwaZulu-Natal."

On Monday, regions in the province are expected to present reports to the party’s war council.
