There is a particular peculiarity about coloured nationalism argues Dr Ebrahim Harvey in his recent opinion piece on News24, in which he explores its resurgence in the Western Cape.

It is not something, says Harvey, that can be equated, for example, with Zulu nationalism or indeed Afrikaner nationalism.

"There is a particular thing about what has happened in the Cape, that we need to address."
Dr Ebrahim Harvey, political analyst and writer

Harvey suggests the issue dates back to 1994 and so-called coloured voters putting their support behind 'the oppressor', the then Nationalist Party (NP) rather than the African National Congress (ANC).

"Because they prematurely disbanded the UDF in 1991, because they were under pressure from the returning exiled ANC leadership."
Dr Ebrahim Harvey, political analyst and writer
"You have to ask yourself, how is it that the ANC which controls the army and the police have been unable to put an end to unprecedented bloodletting on the Cape Flats?"
Dr Ebrahim Harvey, political analyst and writer

Fadiel Adams is a member of the National Assembly and founder of the National Coloured Congress (NCC).

Do you consider yourself a coloured nationalist, asks Kiewit?

"Nationalist? Yes. Because I'm gatvol, I'm tired of seeing good children die for no reason, except politics."
Fadiel Adams, Member of Parliament for the National Coloured Congress

Adams says in the run-up to the May 29 election, the NCC was the only party specifically centering the coloured voter.

"Everybody else did it subtly, they were talking about inclusivity, we were the first ones to talk about the exclusivity of the coloured people."
Fadiel Adams, Member of Parliament for the National Coloured Congress
