CAPE TOWN - More than 20,000 homes in 37 areas in Cape Town have been severely affected by the stormy weather.

A third cold front in a week made landfall on Wednesday night, causing widespread flooding and damage to property.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has been visiting some of the worst-affected areas.

"They are generally, unfortunately, in informal settlements where people have settled on river banks or near to stormwater retention ponds, which are all swelling to the point of bursting their banks."

Hill-Lewis said that emergency services were assisting residents to move to higher ground or find temporary accommodation.

"We currently have over 20,000 homes affected, so we will definitely not be able to accommodate everyone, only the worst-affected. Other than that, we have teams working on cleaning up trees and unblocking roads, most of that is already done, with a few areas still being worked on."
