JOHANNESBURG - Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) provincial chairperson, Nkululeko Dunga, has been fired from his position as the finance MMC in the City of Ekurhuleni.
The metro’s mayor, Doctor Xhakaza, announced the decision to remove Dunga, who had been in the position for a year, through a statement on Wednesday night.
This followed the city’s inability to agree on the contents and to pass a budget.
Xhakaza said the development will allow for the metro to fast-track the completion and approval of its annual budget.
An already tense relationship between the EFF and the African National Congress (ANC) is likely to get worse, with Xhakaza booting out the Dunga from his executive.
Dunga, in the lead-up to this development, had already started expressing some frustration, claiming the mayor had stripped him of some of his powers.
"He has removed the Department of ICT [Information and Communication Technology] and placed it under corporate and share services without consultation, which we fundamentally have a problem with."
The City of Ekurhuleni failed to pass a budget twice under Dunga’s stewardship due to political infighting within the ANC-EFF partnership.
The deadline to adopt a budget is Friday and failure to do so will force the Gauteng government to intervene.
Xhakaza said Dunga’s removal from the finance portfolio would fast-track the approval of the city’s annual budget.
