DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police have condemned a circulating voice note alleging that the deadly shooting in KwaXimba was linked to political violence.

On Thursday morning, officers shot and killed four suspected criminals during a shootout in the area.

Hours later, an audio recording made the rounds on social media alleging that 11 people were killed in a suspected political violence incident.

Police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda, has slammed the allegations.

"The voice note recklessly alleges that a vehicle was going around shooting at least four houses at KwaXimba in the Umsunduzi area. No dates nor timeframes are specified in the voice note and police condemn such a malicious statement with the contempt it deserves."

He added that anyone found to be spreading malicious information would be dealt with.

"Police are discouraging people from making or spreading statements that have a potential of inciting violence or create a state of panic in the communities. Those who are found to have made inflammatory statements will be dealt with in accordance with the law."
