JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Education Department has raised concerns over the murder of teachers in the province following the death of two educators in separate incidents.
The department said on Friday, one teacher was shot in Vanderbijlpark while another suffered the same fate in Daveyton later on the same day.
According to police, the Vanderbijlpark teacher was shot at a traffic light.
"The Life Orientation Riverside High School educator was driving to work on Friday morning when she was fatally shot by an unknown assailant at a traffic light near North-West University’s Vaal Campus," departmental spokesperson Steve Mabona said.
Four suspects including her ex-husband have been arrested in connection to the murder.
"On Friday evening, the departmental head of commerce from Unity Secondary School was also fatally shot inside his car in Daveyton," added Mabona.
The provincial education department has conveyed its condolences to the families of both teachers.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding both incidents.
