CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has tabled its alternative budget, which is focused on four key priorities to get the country out of its economic hole.

These include creating an environment conducive for economic growth and addressing power cuts.

As is customary, the DA on Monday presented its alternative budget a few days before the finance minister gives his budget speech detailing the country’s spending priorities.

The DA also said that the continued bailouts of SOEs would come to an end and it would save billions by reducing the number of "millionaire managers" in the public service.

The party’s finance spokesperson, Dion George, said the DA's priorities were to facilitate economic growth that generated jobs and revitalising the energy sector to address load shedding.

Supporting social wages and the poor from rising costs was the second priority.

"And three, achieving fiscal stability through controlled government expenditure and debt reduction. Four, supporting vulnerable South Africans by protecting social wages."

The party also said it would not do away with social grants but wanted an increase of the child grant.

"But we believe that they can be enhanced. So, the SRD can evolve into a job seeker's grant, the child grant can increase."

George said the DA would achieve it targets without raising taxes or raiding the reserve bank’s risk reserves.
