CAPE TOWN - Rain continued to pummel parts of the Western Cape on Wednesday.

The inclement weather conditions started overnight on Sunday and most roads had since been affected.

Western Cape Disaster Management Head, Colin Deiner, said that the two worst-affected areas were the Overberg District Municipality and the Garden Route District.

"So, in the Overberg District, it was Cape Agulhas and Overstrand municipalities that were mostly impacted. Various roads were flooded. Yesterday, the Phola Park community in Bredasdorp were affected and provided with blankets and other humanitarian aid. Overnight, there has been an additional 70 millimeters of rain in that area," said Deiner.

Deiner said that a number of roads, including the Bredasdorp and Swellendam roads, had been closed.

"There are no communities in danger there.....In Oudtshoorn, in the Garden Route area, that has been affected quite a lot in terms of high water levels. The Meiringspoort and Swartberg passes were closed due to the flooding and there are various other closures due to rockfalls," he added.

Deiner said the Cango Mountain Resort had been closed.

"In Oudtshoorn, we received news this morning that three people were cut off at Welgeluk. The South African Police divers have responded, they are already on the scene. They are just looking at the best option of being able to remove the people from the area," said Deiner.
