CAPE TOWN - Former Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool says he is hopeful the African National Congress (ANC) can reclaim its top position in the province.
The former SA ambassador to the United States was in the Langa township in the Western Cape on Saturday as part of a door-to-door campaign for the ANC ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Rasool said the polls are crucial for the survival of the ANC, adding that his aim was not to score any political position but to help revive the governing party.
"Maybe what we are busy doing now is to use my skill not to lead the ANC, but to go back to the formula that said how do we bring this faction in, how to bring that one in. How do we stop the racial divisions in the ANC between Africans and Coloureds? How do we get only the finest leaders? I'm much more here to bring wisdom."
The former premier said the ANC deserves another chance because it has shown people that it can cleanse itself by getting rid of those accused of corruption.
"I think we have gone through a process of amputating infections out of the ANC. We have started with amputating those who stole from VBS [Mutual Bank] they are outside the ANC, then those who were with the Vrede Farm and all of those kinds of things. We have amputated those."
Meanwhile, Zuko Phakela, a Langa resident told Eyewitness News he was not sure who to vote for in the upcoming elections.
"But nobody looks after the actual voters or the actual people that's why I would say right now, I don't who to vote for. I'm not going to say I'm going to vote for the ANC or this, I don't know right now."
