The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says time is ticking for South Africans to register to vote as the election date will soon be gazetted.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday that the local government elections will be held on 4 November.

While the official date has been announced, Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has yet to officially proclaim the date.

IEC spokesperson David Mandaha says once the date is proclaimed, no new voter registrations or residential address updates will be accepted.

"The Electoral Commission, however, notes that this announcement does not constitute the formal proclamation of the election date. In terms of the law, the official proclamation will be made by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, at which point the voters’ roll will be closed."
