The government has rejected claims that it is failing to act on illegal immigration following recent demonstrations against undocumented foreign nationals.
Dozens of people marched through the Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday, calling for the deportation of undocumented migrants.
The protesting groups, including ActionSA and civil organisation March and March, are demanding stricter immigration controls.
ActionSA and March and March believe the government is turning a blind eye to businesses that continue to employ undocumented migrants.

They also believe South Africa’s weak visa regulations have contributed to what they’ve termed the influx of illegal immigration.
However, government spokesperson William Baloyi has refuted these claims, saying work is underway to address the country’s porous borders.
“Government is strengthening measures to address illegal immigration, including tightening border controls to combat unlawful entry, illicit trade, and fraudulent activities that undermine revenue collection and the rule of law.”
Meanwhile, the demonstrators have vowed to take their protest to other parts of the country, as they intensify calls for action against illegal immigration.
